Whimsie by Alejandra Rojas

Whimsie is a collection that blurs the line between art and design, exploring the space where sculptural forms meet interior decor. Central to the collection is the idea of repetition, both in concept and craftsmanship. Instead of designing one final piece, Alejandra Rojas has envisioned a design system that allows for endless configurations. Different modules connect to one another in various ways, ensuring that no two arrangements are ever the same. Each composition represents a unique moment, a snapshot of one possible arrangement in time.

The creative process begins with 3D modeling and digital experimentation, where patterns, forms, and textures are developed. This is followed by 3D printing, plaster mold-making, and slip casting, allowing for the precise repetition of forms with room for organic variation. The final ceramic pieces are hand-painted, and color is tested extensively to achieve finishes that shift in tone and intensity, offering surprises with each viewing.

Each piece is designed not only to be seen but also to be felt and interacted with. Patterns play a key role, offering an intensely tactile experience that invites touch and draws viewers in to explore surface details. The collection takes inspiration from everyday encounters with urban remnants, particularly translucent beer plastic rings found on the streets of NYC. These objects, often overlooked and annoying in their ubiquity, sparked an exploration of their geometry and design potential.

ABOUT ALEJANDRA ROJAS

Alejandra Rojas is an artist, designer and architect based in New York City, and has has a studio at Rockella Space since 2020. She is a Peruvian immigrant who grew up in an artistic environment. She pursued a career in architecture at the University of Waterloo in Canada. Later, she completed a Master’s in Architecture and Urbanism at the Architectural Association in London where she specialized in computational design and fabrication. Her studies allowed her to travel to multiple cities for work and study including Toronto, NYC, Rome, and London. She started working with clay as a creative outlet, but she decided to bring what she had learned and loved from architecture and establish her own studio. For the past few years, she has developed her research for patterns and unusual forms and transformed them into sculptural clay objects.

Alejandra’s work has been showcased at several international exhibitions including Milan Design Week 2024 as part of Isola Design Exhibition: This Future is currently unavailable. She has participated at the London Festival of Architecture as part Architect-Maker Pop-up at Cuemars, at 1000 vases for the 1000 VASES Paris exhibition during Paris Art Week.
