ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

Please join us for a presentation of rare & covetable art design objects by Miguel Bendaña, Logan Blagg, Nava Derakhshani, Samhita Kamisetty, Amalya Meira, Levani & Asya Yaschenko. Borrowing aesthetics and ethical dialectic from the 2 nihilistic Maries in Vera Chytilová’s 1966 film Daisies and a rigorous, secret inquiry found online, 𝘿𝘼𝙄𝙎𝙄𝙀𝙎 invites visitors to internalize good design as critical social practice.

If the entire world is bad, why shouldn’t we be? -Daisies

Where’s it made? Who brought it here? How much were they paid? Who makes it? Is it made in separate parts and put together? How much were they all paid to do this? Where do they get the materials? Who paid for that? Who brings it there? How much were they paid? Who streamlined the base materials? How much were they paid? Who gathered the base materials? Where? How much were they paid? Is it good for them? Is it good for us? Is it good for the land? Is it necessary? Is it biodegradable? How much does it hurt? Do I need it? Do I even want it? -x

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Miguel Bendaña

Miguel Bendaña (b. 1988, USA) lives and works in New York. Recent exhibitions include a solo presentation at James Cope, Dallas (2022), as well as group exhibitions at Ensemble, New York; Chris Andrews, Montréal; Lomex, New York; Mercy Pictures, Auckland; and Lulu, Mexico City. Bendaña co-founded Queer Thoughts, a gallery active from 2012 to 2023.

Logan Blagg

Logan Blagg is a textile artist based in Brooklyn, NY, creating clothing and soft sculptures using scraps and reclaimed materials collected over the years. All works are inspired by planets and worlds molded by Logan herself, with each layer unearthing new colors, shapes and textures while fusing retro-futurism and fantasy into our natural environments. Logan recently extended her practice by co-opening Lagoon New York, an independent design shop functioning as a store, studio, and gallery. Located in Bed-Stuy, Lagoon highlights production alongside wearable art, inviting the customer to see who makes their clothes while interacting with one-of-a-kind garments.

Nava Derakhshani

Nava Derakhshani is a multidisciplinary artist working across ceramics, performance, photography, video, and installation. Born in Southern Africa to Iranian parents, her work engages themes of womanhood, diaspora, and cultural hybridity. Derakhshani is an MFA graduate from Hunter College in New York City and holds prior degrees from the International Center for Photography, Stellenbosch University, and the University of Cape Town. Her background in architecture, social research, and non-profit work in Southern Africa and India informs her geopolitical awareness and sensitivity to place and power. Her practice is shaped by political displacement, often weaving together storytelling, mythology, and social critique. Her work has been shown internationally at venues including Culture Lab LIC (New York), The Tutu Legacy Foundation (South Africa), MIA Photo Fair (Milan), and the Environmental Photo Festival in Zingst (Germany). She is a recipient of the Mabou Mines Suite/Space grant, a former resident at the Center for the Less Good Idea founded by William Kentridge, and her photography and writing have been published in The Washington Post, Ain’t–Bad Magazine, and The Eurasia Review. Derakhshani’s interdisciplinary approach balances sharp social commentary with poetic, intimate gestures.

Amalya Meira

Amalya Meira In dreamlike crochet and sunprinted silks, Amalya creates wearable and non wearable works examining time, materiality and intention. Often employing inherently ephemeral and sight specific techniques to realize familiar shapes, these out of time relics guide one to consider the intrinsic potential of well loved silhouettes, and how they may be reanimated. Celebrating the maker, Amalya’s hand is consciously ever present. Utilizing a vocabulary of transparent construction and zero waste patterning throughout, Amalya’s eponymous clothing line Amalya Meira favors the highly textured & is composed solely of repurposed or deadstock materials. Ever fascinated by the concept of contributing to the urban conversation, Amalya’s creative practice has most recently manifested in the form of a physical storefront, Lagoon. Located in Brooklyn, NY, here live creation simultaneously communicates the production cycle of a garment, while naturally fostering a like minded dialogue welcoming the curious. Part studio, part independent design boutique visitors are invited to explore their personal styles, place a custom order and inquire about the unique story behind each object. This season Amalya Meira debuted collaborative film Moss World, presented Tidepool, a new collection in Reworked Runway interactive showcase, and created custom crochet works for the A24 film Materialists. Amalya has shown works as Fabscrap New York Featured Designer, at NYFW, Paris Fashion Week, Miami Art Basel and has works currently stocked in stores throughout New York, Guadalajara and Mexico City. Amalya holds degrees from Central St. Martins, Parsons and Eugene Lang.

Levani

Levani is a Tbilisi-born transdisciplinary maker living and working in New York and Tbilisi. Ze holds an MFA from IUNA Buenos Aires and a BFA from the Tbilisi Academy of Arts. Levani has exhibited extensively internationally at venues and institutions such as CUE art foundation, NY; Artists Alliance Inc. NY; Georgian National Museum, Tbilisi; The Bronx Museum of the Arts, NY; Tartu Art Museum; Tbilisi Kunsthalle; Socrates Sculpture Park, NY; the Beijing Biennial, Mystetskyi Arsenal, Kyiv; and the BRIC Biennial, among others. Levani’s works are in Public collections of The National Art Museum of China, Beijing; Tbilisi Silk Museum, and Georgian National Museum, Mestia.

Samhita Kamisetty

Samhita Kamisetty is a visual artist based in Brooklyn, New York, with roots in Portland, Oregon, and Bangalore, India. Her multidisciplinary practice spans illustration, ceramics, natural dyeing, and design. She explores themes of materiality, memory, and function, collaging narratives and shapes drawn from rituals and everyday life to connect with and honor her two worlds. Her process weaves family archives with materials embedded in cultural history and regeneration, reframing tradition through a new lens. As an extension of her practice, Samhita produces and teaches natural dye workshops, focusing on the bundle dye technique, which uses botanicals to create unique textile pieces. Her work has been exhibited in New York, New Delhi, Berlin, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, Miami, and Mexico City. She holds a BFA in Studio Art and Communications from New York University.

Asya Yaschenko

ABOUT TEMPEST GALLERY

At TEMPEST, we want to talk about art in a maelstrom. We invite artists to be unafraid to broach difficult conversations and address colonial structures of violence through their practice in textiles, sculpture and installation. Our main desire is that each monthly show present layered themes where multiple cultural references intersect and tussle.

Launched in 2024, Tempest Gallery is located at Rockella Space’s One Eyed Studios in Ridgewood, Queens. Through our programming and events, we aim to create community and a space for gathering, presenting work and building relationships.

Please visit us at 1642 Weirfield Street, Ridgewood Queens, NY, during our regular gallery hours Wednesday-Saturday, 1-6pm.
