MEET THE CURATOR

Eunice CHEN Yuyue (Chongqing, China) is a curator based in New York City. She completed her M.A. in Curatorial Practice at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2023. Previously, she received her B.S. in Accounting from Chongqing University and her M.M. in Accounting and Finance from the University of Melbourne. In 2022, she interned as a curatorial assistant at Bergen Assembly 2022 in Norway. She has previously worked and interned at the LUXELAKES A4 Art Museum in Chengdu, the Zhejiang Art Museum in Hangzhou, and TEDxCQU 2016 in Chongqing. In her curatorial practice, she is concerned about mobility labor, memory in migration and diaspora, and environmental injustice. Her exhibitions focus on how artists engage with global and local audiences through new media art in public discourses.

CURATORIAL STATEMENT

“The diverse socio-cultural milieus have propelled my curatorial research curiosity towards exploring transnational and interdisciplinary artistic practices, weaving with the nuanced dynamics of various economic, socio-political, and geopolitical landscapes. My curatorial practice focuses on the representation of interdisciplinary new media arts produced by artists who exist as outsiders, foreigners, and migrants. I explore their social engagements with local communities, art institutions, and cultural departments. These artistic narratives serve as the representations of subtle entanglement between differences and disparities conditioned by identity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, and social capital.

My research will sharpen on migrations, globalization, memory, and space through new media arts. I am particularly intrigued by the socio-economic and political impacts of residency artistic practices. I want to explore how the artists who are in between places practice their artworks in collaboration with local institutions, communities, and organizations. Specifically, I am concerned about the residency’s artistic practices in terms of their design and aesthetic values and, more importantly, in their economic and political contexts in New York City.”
