Curator in Residence At Level Gallery Supported By Rockella Space
We are kicking off the year by beginning to implement cultural events at Rockella Space that not only support our community but highlight the wonderful work our Members are all creating. Our first cultural event for the year is joining forces with Level Art Gallery, a Rockella Space Member-Run initiative, in support of a Curator-In-Residence program that will culminate in multiple cultural exhibitions.
The Curator-in-Residence at Level Gallery supported by Rockella Space allows our Members to have their work not only seen by an up-and-coming Curator but also have their work curated into special exhibitions that are scheduled to coincide with this year’s Ridgewood Open Studio (ROS) (more details to come about ROS!). It is just another way we are working towards supporting those who are a part of our community.
Find out more about Level Art Gallery’s Curator-in-Reisdence Eunice CHEN Yuyue below and keep your eyes peeled as we highlight the Rockella Space Members that resonated most with Eunice during her time with us.
The residency period begins February 1st, through May 30th, 2024. During this time, Eunice will schedule multiple visits with Rockella Space Members at One-Eyed Studios, Brown Bears Studios, and Decatur St Studios. After initial studio visits, she will select several artists to continue to work closely with, leading up to multiple exhibition/s that will open during Ridgewood Open Studios at One Eyed Studios in May 2024. The exhibitions are open to the public for three weeks following ROS and are exhibited within multiple studio sites at One Eyed Studios.

MEET THE CURATOR
Eunice CHEN Yuyue (Chongqing, China) is a curator based in New York City. She completed her M.A. in Curatorial Practice at the School of Visual Arts in New York in 2023. Previously, she received her B.S. in Accounting from Chongqing University and her M.M. in Accounting and Finance from the University of Melbourne. In 2022, she interned as a curatorial assistant at Bergen Assembly 2022 in Norway. She has previously worked and interned at the LUXELAKES A4 Art Museum in Chengdu, the Zhejiang Art Museum in Hangzhou, and TEDxCQU 2016 in Chongqing. In her curatorial practice, she is concerned about mobility labor, memory in migration and diaspora, and environmental injustice. Her exhibitions focus on how artists engage with global and local audiences through new media art in public discourses.
“The diverse socio-cultural milieus have propelled my curatorial research curiosity towards exploring transnational and interdisciplinary artistic practices, weaving with the nuanced dynamics of various economic, socio-political, and geopolitical landscapes. My curatorial practice focuses on the representation of interdisciplinary new media arts produced by artists who exist as outsiders, foreigners, and migrants. I explore their social engagements with local communities, art institutions, and cultural departments. These artistic narratives serve as the representations of subtle entanglement between differences and disparities conditioned by identity, nationality, race, gender, sexuality, and social capital.
My research will sharpen on migrations, globalization, memory, and space through new media arts. I am particularly intrigued by the socio-economic and political impacts of residency artistic practices. I want to explore how the artists who are in between places practice their artworks in collaboration with local institutions, communities, and organizations. Specifically, I am concerned about the residency’s artistic practices in terms of their design and aesthetic values and, more importantly, in their economic and political contexts in New York City.”
